PMA Grant

In 2024, we lost a dear friend of The Arches, Phil Michael Aizlewood, who tragically died by

suicide. Phil was a remarkable person and a phenomenal actor whose passing sent

shockwaves through his community, reaching far beyond what we could have ever

anticipated. To honour his memory, Simon Naylor, Creative Director of 53two, along  with

Phil’s peers, are establishing the PMA Grant through the registered charity Fifty Three Two.

How It Works

A group of Phil’s friends and colleagues (Donors) have pledged to contribute a small amount

annually. A Steering Committee, appointed by the Board of 53two from among the Donors,

will propose causes to receive the total funds raised each year. This can be split over several

causes. These proposals will be reviewed by The Board, which will make the final decision

on fund allocation. The Board’s decision will be final, and neither the Steering Committee

nor the Donors will have the authority to amend it.

Grant Eligibility & Purpose

The Steering Committee will compile a shortlist of nominations from submissions made by Donors. Each nomination must support:

  • An individual or group with an arts-related objective, particularly initiatives that enhance the well-being of those struggling with mental health challenges.

  • An arts-based project that contributes to raising awareness or improving the well- being of individuals with poor mental health.

  • Drama school expenses, including accommodation, materials, and audition-related costs (e.g., fees and transport).

  • Underrepresented or underserved individuals, assisting them in pursuing educational or personal development opportunities (e.g., workshops).

  • Community groups that promote arts education for underserved individuals or groups, particularly those who might not otherwise receive such support.

  • Mental health and personal development programs, using arts as a tool for engagement, inter-personal growth, and mental health improvement.

The funds cannot be used to produce a show or film unless the Steering Committee and Board determine that the project directly contributes to mental health awareness or improvement.

Fund Management & Distribution

Funds will be collected through Fifty Three Two’s existing fundraising platform (Charity No. 1179418) via Donr. These will be classified as restricted funds, ensuring transparency and proper allocation. Any administrative fees incurred will be covered by the donations.

Key Funding Terms:

  • Maximum donation: £1,000 per recipient (individual or group).

•Frequency: No recipient may receive funding more than once within a 12-month period.

  • Simon Naylor and Fifty Three Two will oversee fund distribution and require each recipient to submit an impact report within 12 months.

Our Aim

Through the PMA Grant, we seek to transform the devastating loss of Phil into a positive and lasting impact on the arts community and those struggling with mental health challenges. By supporting individuals and groups in these fields, we hope to create a meaningful legacy that honours Phil’s life and passion.
